One of the most iconic sneakers in Nike's rich history is the Waffle Racer. Bill Bowerman - founder of Blue Ribbon Sports, which would later become Nike in 1972, experimented with a waffle iron to produce the legendary sole. Bill was constantly working to change and redefine the norm for running equipment. His ultimate breakthrough was the Waffle Sneaker, which successfully launched in 1973, and is now regarded as one of, if not the most groundbreaking innovation in running footwear. It proved that not only the midsole, but also the outsole can absorb shock and respond/adapt to uneven running surfaces. Previously, many track and field soles were flat and thin, but the waffle sole and its signature pattern provided extra support and rebound. This was the first major innovation from Nike.

Over the years, the Waffle Racer has seen loads of retros and technical updates. The 2003 batch of releases saw a variety of sleek colorways that featured breathable metal mesh on the upper and tongue. These have aged beautifully over the past 20 years, and it's no wonder that Virgil Abloh was compelled to use this silhouette as a canvas during his time collaborating with Nike.
