In the late '90s into the early 2000s, Nike developed an obsession with trail running, in part due to Nike's Oregon location and the hiking interests of many designers and people on the product teams. Nike Trail running shoes of this era essentially pulled elements from ACG and Nike Running, and fused them together to create an entirely new type of footwear. These pairs were designed to tackle a variety of terrain without sacrificing comfort, speed, or flexibility.
The Nike Air Humara was the very first shoe from legendary designer, Peter Fogg and initially released in 1997 in the midst of the trail era. They were inspired by motorcycle wheels – evident by their thick, high-traction soles and tire-mark like pattern on the upper. These cult favorites were appreciated not only by adventure seekers, but they were a hit in urban communities too, seamlessly crossing over into the lifestyle category.
However, this specific pair were part of Nike's 'Considered Design', resulting in some noticeable differences from the original. Considered Design was the brand's second official initiative at a more sustainable approach to footwear (similar to Space Hippie today), which utilized recycled/environmentally friendly materials. Nike hoped this practice would extend beyond just this line and eventually become engrained in their brand ethos. The entire Considered line was quite ahead of its time and contained a plethora of overlooked footwear that would influence models in the future like Flyknit, Air Jordan XX3, and React 87 to name a few.
Features included hemp laces, cork footbed, recycled phylon, recycled synthetic toe/heel bumpers, fully stitched trailframe midsole, and more.
