The Nike Considered line officially launched in 2005 with a small team of motivated designers who were tasked with creating a fully closed-loop shoe with as little environmental impact as possible. Among them were Steve McDonald, Richard Clarke, Tinker Hatfield, Andreas Harlow, and Mike Aveni. All of the finished products created by the program had strict requirements. They had to completely decompose naturally and/or be constructed with reusable or recyclable parts. Each product was limited to five different materials. All materials had to be sourced within a 200-mile radius of the factories where the shoes were produced. For colors, only vegetable dyes and leathers tanned with recycled wastewater could be used.
Following the first generation of Nike Considered, the program continued to evolve with additional releases inspired by other Nike categories—including basketball. This blend of the program’s principles with more athletic design cues led to a range of forward-thinking footwear, pushing the program's influence a step further. The 2k5, a top choice for hoopers at the time, was one of the models to receive the Considered treatment. Out of the handful of colorways and iterations, this pair, with its smooth brown leather and signature woven detailing, stands out from the rest. Although the Considered 2k5 was not necessarily designed for on-court performance, the concept of a more sustainable approach to athletic footwear would carry into subsequent releases such as the Air Jordan XXIII.
