The legendary Air Force 1 is one of the bestselling shoes of all time and was introduced in 1982 by Nike designer Bruce Kilgore. Little has changed since then with the exception of different silhouette shapes and materials. It has seen over 1700 different colorways and maintained top notch relevance for 40 years without the need for much marketing.

Initially it was only available as a high-top and provided ball players with a sturdy yet cushioned sneaker – as it was Nike's first time using Air cushioning on a basketball sneaker. Nike had plans to nix the model in favor of the newest style or technology on the scene, but it quickly caught fire in east coast cities thanks in part to a "Color of the Month" initiative by a group of Baltimore retailers (Charley Rudo, Downtown Locker Room, and Cinderella Shoes). These spots requested special makeups for exclusive colorways, and each sold out of 1000 pairs in just a few days, fueling underground hype and cult status in the region.

Nike took note and a few years later in 1986 began releasing east regional exclusive colorways almost every month for the next 5 years. Flash forward to the 90s, the wider released of the all-white Air Force 1 Low brought the shoe to new heights and cemented it as an urban classic. It received shoutouts from the likes of Jay-Z and The Lox to name a few, paving the way for Nike to open up the playbook in the 2000s to city legends, ball players, and fashion icons, who would use the model as a canvas for their own creativity.

The AF1 Mid first dropped in the mid-90s as a lifestyle option to the original performance designed high-top, and are most recognized for their signature strap. These were released as part of Nike's 25th anniversary of the Air Force 1 and feature a special "XXV" hit on the tongue patch. They are comprised of smooth nubuck and suede, and white leather on the toebox and tongue. The colorway indirectly pays homage to the classic colors of UNC, one of the most iconic basketball programs in college history.
