The Air Stab, short for stability, originally released in 1988 to give runners the benefits of stability and Air cushioning. It was the first Air Max shoe to release after the Air Max 1 launched in 1987. This pair features a mesh upper with tumbled leather overlays, a Polyurethane midsole, Air-Sole unit in the heel, and a waffle outsole. The air window is particularly unique and was creatively divided with two ‘icicles’ slicing from the top of the midsole - the shoe's signature characteristic. They have been retroed numerous times in various colorways and have an interesting past.
After its initial release, it didn't see much action as Nike was quickly evolving the Air Max line with newer models featuring larger Air Max units. It wasn't until 2005, the first Air Stab retro arrived to the masses. Not long after in July 2008, the Air Stab was pulled from shelves in the UK due to a high-volume of deaths by stabbing. An incident in Niketown London where two security guards were stabbed when they confronted a couple of shoplifters, served as the catalyst for the Stab receiving the axe. Even though the shoplifters weren't after the Stabs, the sneaker's name placed it right in the mix. Ever since, the stab is yet to reappear.
