Last year was the 30th anniversary for the Nike Air BW – one of the cleanest, most stylish Air Max models designed by none other than Tinker Hatfield. The BW holds obvious similarities to its predecessor the Air Max 90, featuring the same Nike Air sole unit, ample mesh ventilation for long-distance running, and a near identical silhouette. The BW is short for “Big Window”, referencing the visible air bubble, which was slightly larger than the Air Max 90 released one year earlier.

Back in the 1990s, the latest Air Max models in the series were referred to in numerical order. After the Air Max I came the Air Max Light (Air Max II), Air Max 90 (Air Max III), and Air BW (Air Max IV). Early Tinker Hatfield sketches of the BW confirm this whereby he referred to the model as the Air Max 4. This explains why the BW was marketed alongside the Air Max 90 in the ‘Air Even More Max’ print ad. Ironically, “Air Max” was never officially in the shoe’s original name, despite being included on the back of the heel.

This retro showcases a color palette reminiscent of the acclaimed "Stash" Air Classic BW. Grey mesh combined with smooth deep royal and white leather wrap around the upper to create a well-rounded, easily wearable colorway.
