This performance pair of Air Max certainly had their moment, grabbing the attention of both sneakerheads and running enthusiasts. The advanced tech although 11 years old, makes this model seem as if it could release today. The Air Max 2012 showcases a super lightweight Hyperfuse/mesh upper, sitting atop a full-length Air Max cushioning unit that stretches from heel to toe for a progressive ride. The injected rubber outsole provides durability and support. Tonal laces accompany the web-style color blocking to help accentuate the familiar design. They are essentially the Free Run 2 turned up a notch. Upon release, they retailed for a hefty tag of $170.
This specific pair was part of the Nike+ technology — a software program collaboration between Nike and Apple that tracked the performance of runners through a wireless connection. The proprietary system consisted of several components: the Nike+ sensor, a pair of shoes compatible with Nike+, a Nike+ tracking device (iPod), an iTunes membership, and a Nike+ online community.
The sensor and iPod kit were revealed on May 20, 2006. To activate the sensor, it had to be placed under the insole of the Nike+ compatible shoe. The kit stored real-time information such as the elapsed time of the workout, distance traveled, pace, and calories burned by the individual.
At its peak, Nike+ had 28 million global users as of April 2014. By 2018, Nike no longer supported the Nike+ Connect software.
