Once upon a time, MJ asked for Griffey Jr.’s autograph at the 1993 MLB All-Star game.

Before Ken Griffey Jr., baseball players rarely marketed shoes, let alone for everyday fashion. You had Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders, but their sneakers were geared for the football field more than the diamond. Griffey was different, and his swag was off the charts inspiring a whole generation. Between the backward cap, the iconic swing, the charisma, the home runs, the leaping grabs, appearances on the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, his own video games like Ken Griffey Jr.'s Slugfestand of course the shoes, it was hard not to like The Kid.

Junior went on to enjoy one of the most successful signatures series of the 1990s. Tracy Teague, who is responsible for an impressive line of Nike's signature series, designed both Griffey's on-field cleats and off-field turf kicks, unofficially starting with the Nike Air Diamond Fury 96 (which did not bear his name). Then would come the game-changing Air Griffey Max 1, followed by the Air Griffey Max 2, Air Max 360 Diamond Griffey, Nike Air Max Griffey Fury, Nike Air Max Jr. and Nike Total Griffey Max 99.

The lesser-known GD II is truly a unique design and draws few similarities to any other in Nike's extensive catalog. For this pair, Nike used multiple types of black leather for the upper, and neon hues for the 360 Max Air unit and semi-translucent outsole providing a sharp contrast. The Griffey Swingman logo appears on the tongue tab and bottom, while the G6 and Replica signature hit on the inner lining.
